Wellcome Trust - Break-out Space

Light, softness and a sense of order

Location: London
Status: Complete

3|10 Studio were commissioned to redesign the two principal breakout spaces for conference delegates at the Wellcome Trust Euston Road HQ in London.

The brief called for a move away from the somewhat austere and corporate nature of the former spaces and the creation of a flexible, bright and calming space to gather, wait or work. Important functional requirements included improved disabled access, acoustic attenuation within the space and acoustic separation from the adjoining conference suites.

One of the principle features of the rooms is the bespoke lighting grid feature a total of 98 custom made, hand-blown opaque glass lampshades hung on a gentle catenary that rises up at the edges of the room. As a completely new element, the strict orthogonal white steel frame from which the shades are hung relates directly to the existing grid that defines the panelling of the space, with the gentle, natural form of the shades hung on their shallow catenary, acting as a soft, natural counterpoint to the prevailing order.
